System Engineer Senior – UNIX

Location: Columbia, MD 21046

Job Description:
Provides identification/fixing of problems within existing systems, design/implementation of new systems and enhancement of existing systems. Participates in analysis, design and new construction of next generation IT systems. Responsible for understanding the needs of the customers and the realities of commercially available IT products, and creating requirements that will allow implementation by the development team. Experience as a systems engineer on one or more IT platforms is preferred. Must have solid technical background with a focus on IT systems. Skillareas include telecommunications (ex. - TCP/IP, OIS/CMIP/X25), operating systems (ex. - Windows, NT, UNIX), database/DBMS (ex. - Oracle, Access, Sybase) and applications (ex. - Tivoli, Peoplesoft, etc.) are required. Familiarity with ITIL, SEI/CMM desirable.
The candidate will support one or more of three tasks: the Security Management /Monitoring task; the Secure Boundary task, and/or the Secure Access Architecture and Development task.
Responsible for UNIX Operating System Administration, configuration, and system level application support, network and server monitoring and performance tuning of Operating System, hardware, and applications. Evaluate, and recommend new hardware and software to support an expanding enterprise network infrastructure and is responsible for server hardware and system capacity planning. Forecasts and proactively recommend strategic hardware and software upgrades or replacements when service statistics indicate upcoming unsatisfactory performance levels. Setup user logins, password, account information, and security for the servers. Contribute to developing plans - backup, capacity and information assurance/security. Also responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting system backups. Designs systems and network configurations for optimum performance along with troubleshooting and problem resolutions. Documents and maintains hardware, software and network standards, Unix Architecture Design, implementation and support.
Job Requirements:
U. S. Citizenship is required. A TS/SCI clearance is required.
Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years related experience, or High School Diploma and 9 years experience, or Associates Degree and 7 years related experience, or Master’s
Degree and 3 years related experience, or Doctorate and 1 year related experience.
